You might think news organizations would end the week with focal coverage on the Senate GOP bill to remake 1/6 of the American economy and impact the lives of tens of millions of Americans. That assumption is wrong. Here is how major news networks choose to send you into the weekend:
CNN is going with a Russian jet encounter. Maybe to differentiate from the other news powerhouses covering health care for now. The danger is more photogenic than healthcare. The New York Times is covering who benefits from health care. Fox News is covering Nancy Pelosi’s unpopularity – a well-worn and well-received topic amongst Fox viewers – despite its minor substance this week. To be fair, health care is on the front page of nearly every major site; it is just not the main headline at this hour.
The lede: US European Command released dramatic photos that show the moment a Russian Su-27 fighter jet flew within five feet of a US Air Force RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea — an encounter US officials assessed to be “unsafe.”
The intercept took place on Monday while the US aircraft was “flying in international airspace,” according to Meghan Henderson, a spokesperson for European Command.
The New York Times: “To Understand the Health Bill, Look at the Bottom Line”
Lede: The Affordable Care Act gave health insurance to millions of Americans by shifting resources from the wealthy to the poor and by moving oversight from states to the federal government. The Senate bill introduced Thursday pushes back forcefully on both dimensions.
Lede: Nancy Pelosi’s problem inside the Democratic caucus isn’t going away – as a new generation of lawmakers starts to openly question her leadership in the wake of consecutive special election losses.
The long-reigning House Democratic leader remained defiant at a press conference Thursday, saying she thrives on “competition” and touting her skills as a “master legislator” and “politically astute leader.”
But inside the rank-and-file, members are getting restless and the call for Pelosi to depart is louder than ever.
